Research proposal writing

Be it a tender application, commissioned or a student’s research proposal; apart from letting you know the necessary items that must appear in it, we will help you with writing your research proposal or give you an example of how it should be written. The process of converting an idea for a research project into a concise, well-defined proposal is frequently the most difficult task of the entire project. Before embarking on a research project, a research proposal should be compiled. The research proposal is a plan that gives structure to the prospective research with the fina1 aim of addressing the research problem or answering the research question. It should convince the sponsor or supervisor/promoter that you have a worthwhile research project and that you have the competence and the work-plan to complete it; it should have sufficient information to convince the reader that you have an important research idea, that you have a good grasp of the relevant literature and the major issues, and that your methodology is sound. Generally, a research proposal should contain all the key elements involved in the research process and include sufficient information for the readers to evaluate the proposed study. All research proposals must address the questions: What do you plan to accomplish? Why do you want to do it? How are you going to do it? The benefits that will result from the research and to whom it will be beneficial should clearly be indicated.
This is our checklist:
  • Does the proposal have imagination?
  • Is the research problem stated precisely and clearly?
  • Are the objectives clear and unambiguous?
  • Are the hypotheses testable?
  • Is the methodology feasible?
  • Are the necessary tools (including computer software) available
  • Is the problem too large in scope?
  • Can data be collected?
  • How will data be analysed?
  • Is the population to be sampled receptive to investigation?
  • Can major research activities be listed?
  • Can a time estimate be attached to each major activity?
  • Is the dissertation trying to do too much? If yes, what can be dropped or reduced to make the project of manageable dimensions?
Research proposal writing should be coherent, clear and compelling otherwise a good research project may risk rejection simply because the proposal is poorly written. In short, the main purpose of a research proposal is to show that the problem you propose to investigate is significant enough to warrant the investigation, the method you plan to use is suitable and feasible, and the results are likely to prove fruitful and will make a contribution to the body of knowledge.
